Want to plan the perfect solo trip to Miami?

This guest post by, Fernweh Foreigner, outlines all you need to know for a fantastic solo trip to Miami.

Although Miami is a large metropolitan city, it is still a great place to enjoy a solo trip and soak up some sun. Follow this guide to plan the perfect solo trip to Miami and see for yourself!

As former South Florida residents, we lived like tourists in Miami and had fun exploring every corner of the city.

Even when Miami has a bit of rain (which it does often) it is the perfect place to spend time outdoors and be immersed in both nature and city life.

The Perfect Solo Trip to Miami: 17 Fun Things to do Alone in Miami

When you are on a solo trip, you don’t want to be bored in a hotel room which is why Miami is such a great place to visit. There is nonstop outdoor, historical and adventurous fun to be had in Miami!

1. Sail On A Catamaran In Biscayne Bay

catamaran cruise is a great thing to do on a solo trip to Miami

This sunset catamaran cruise on the Biscayne Bay is a great way to see some of Miami’s top landmarks, including South Beach and the Miami skyline.

Your ride includes a complimentary glass of champagne, with additional snacks and drinks available for purchase on board.

See an impressive Florida sunset with unobstructed views with this experience, and maybe even make some new friends on board.

2. Soak Up The Sun At Miami Beach

South Pointe Park

We’ve visited just about every beach from Miami up to Jupiter, Florida and our favorite one will always be Miami Beach or South Beach.

We don’t like it for the partying scene, but rather the soft sand and the calm clear waters. If you want that too, we suggest going to the South Pointe Beach where it is a little more of a family crowd.

During the summer, Florida typically gets huge clumps of smelly (sometimes bacteria-filled) seaweed that fills the beaches.

It always gave me a headache so that is another reason why we would choose to visit South Beach instead, where they try to remove as much of it as possible for the tourists.

And although Miami does get rain often, unless it is a hurricane or a tropical storm, the rain typically goes away pretty quickly. So if you’re lying on the beach and storm clouds roll in, your day may not be ruined if you wait it out for a bit.

3. Wander The Halls Of The Ancient Spanish Monastery

monastery in Miami

If it doesn’t make sense that there is an Ancient Spanish Monastery in Miami, Florida, that’s because it was originally built in Spain during the 1100s.

It was moved stone by stone to the United States in 1925 and put back together here in the 1950s.

It is still a working church but you can tour the grounds for $10 which we highly recommend. You can’t really see anything from the parking lot so you do have to go inside to get a good view of this beautiful monastery.

They recommend calling ahead though to make sure there is no special event or filming at the time of your intended visit.

4. Take A Day Trip

Jupiter

Miami has plenty of things to do itself but if you want to explore a little more of South Florida, Palm Beach County just to the north of Miami has some lovely places to visit and some of the best places to snorkel.

The Manatee Lagoon in West Palm Beach is the perfect place to visit on a cold day to  see loads of manatees swim to warmer waters created by the nearby power plant.

Phil Foster Park in West Palm Beach, and Cato’s Bridge and Singer Island in Jupiter have some amazing snorkeling where you can potentially see manatees, turtles, barracuda, sting rays, eels, jellyfish and so much more.

Another great day trip option from Miami is to Key West

This roundtrip tour to Key West gives you 6 free hours to explore the charming island on your own.

5. Airboat Through The Everglades

Everglades day trip is a great experience on a solo trip to Miami

Visiting the Everglades and going on an airboat ride is a must at least once when you take a trip to Miami, and this tour picks up at locations in the city which makes it much easier for solo travelers.

Be sure to bring hats, reef friendly sunscreen and wear comfortable clothes because it will be hot out on the water. Keep your eyes peeled for alligators, iguanas and other Florida wildlife.

6. View Graffiti Art At Wynwood Walls

Wynwood Walls in Miami

Wynwood Walls is the most hipster area of Miami with beautiful street art everywhere you look, and it’s a great place to walk around on your own during the day.

There is an actual museum and tour you can take at the Wynwood Walls, but you can also simply walk the streets and see tons of art on the sides of buildings.

Or, consider this highly-rated Wynwood Graffiti Golf Cart small group tour led by a local guide to get a deep dive into the history along the way.

7. Be Transported To Eighteenth-Century Italy At Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Vizcaya

One of the first places we visited in Miami was the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and it did not disappoint. It’s no wonder so many movies and shows have been filmed at these beautiful grounds.

The Vizcaya Museum was home to millionaire James Deering and was built in 1916 in the Italian Renaissance style. Admission is a little on the higher side, $25, but we felt like it was worth it to get some beautiful pictures.

You can also book a convenient half-day tour that includes both admission as well as transportation to and from the Museum.

8. Cruise By Celebrity Homes In A Jet Boat

Miami speed boat

Although it is a little bit touristy, speeding around the bay and out in front of Miami Beach in a speedboat is a lot of fun if you love the water and you love to go fast.

There are multiple boat companies to choose from but we went with Thriller Miami Speedboat Adventures that leaves out of Bayside Marketplace and we loved the ride.

You also get to see some of the famous celebrity homes that are located out on Star Island while you’re on the boat ride.

9. Take a Little Havana Food and Walking Tour

One of the best areas to explore in Miami is Little Havana. This Little Havana Food and Walking Tour, with nearly 5,000 5-star reviews, is the perfect way to immerse yourself in this cultural pocket of Miami.

Show up hungry to this 2.5 hour tour where you’ll enjoy traditional Cuban food tastings, the best mojito around, Cuban coffee, a cigar factory tour and more!

10. Experience a Miami Plane Tour

Want an unforgettable experience? Take to the skies on a Things to do Alone in Miami at Night

Solo travelers (especially solo female travelers) should be cautious and pay extra attention to their surroundings at night, but there are still some fun things to do alone in Miami at night.

11. Go To an Inter Miami Futbol Game

Inter Miami MLS

We are huge fans of soccer and have been supporters of the MLS team Inter Miami since their birth in 2020 despite their consistent losing streak.

However, the team recently announced their new transfer arrival to be Lionel Messi, who is possibly the best player in the history of the game.

Without him the games were still fun and entertaining, but with him they are going to be even more exciting. Most of their games are held on Saturday nights, with some select Wednesday nights, and this is a perfect solo night activity.

The current stadium is actually located in Fort Lauderdale, they are building a stadium in Miami that is set to open in 2025, but an easy way to get to games from Miami is on the Brightline train.

12. Shop & Eat At Bayside Marketplace

Bayside Marketplace in Miami

If you’ve just taken a jet boat ride or are staying nearby in Downtown Miami, Bayside Marketplace is an easy place to walk to at night and always filled with bright lights and people.

You can take a ride on the Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel, get something to eat at one of the many bayfront restaurants or shop in the mall.

13. Watch The Sunset At South Pointe Park

South Pointe Park sunset

During the summer months, the sun doesn’t set until after 8:00 pm and although it sets to the west, it is still lovely to watch the sunset near the water.

We love to go to South Pointe Park and turn back to the west to watch the sun go down over the city and the bay.

The park is a really nice place to feel the wind from the sea, watch the boats come in and out of the jetty, and relax under the shade of a tree.

It is a longer ride from mainland Miami, but it is easy to walk to South Beach and grab a bite for dinner (our favorite is Pura Vida).

14. Explore Little Havana on Viernes Culturales

Calle Ocho Miami

Once a month the Cuban neighborhood of Little Havana gets even more festive and puts on Viernes Culturales or Cultural Fridays.

On the third Friday of every month you can see the typical sights along Calle Ocho in addition to Cuban music, art, artisans, and a free Walking Tour.

Unfortunately, rain can disrupt the festivities but it is still worth taking the trip over to see Little Havana and stick around in case the rain stops and the activities resume.

Activities start around 12:00 pm, with the walking tour happening at 7:00 pm, and you can find free parking in some of the neighborhood streets within Little Havana (just be sure to read the signs).

15. Check Out The Art Deco On Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive Miami

As the sun starts to go down and the city lights come on, Ocean Drive and all of the Art Deco Buildings burn bright and colorful.

South Beach is notoriously known as the party town so if that’s your thing, this is a great place to do that alone since the streets are always full of people.

If you don’t like partying, South Beach is still a fun place to see historical buildings or get a bite of delicious food (there are tons of different cuisine options in this area).

They also often have different festivals or shows happening along Ocean Drive or in the general South Beach area.

16. Enjoy Salsa Lessons and Mojito’s at Mango’s Nightclub

Just because you’re on a solo trip doesn’t mean you can’t revel in Miami’s epic nightlife. Joining a group dance class at a nightclub is the perfect way to go out alone without feeling completely alone.

The evening begins with salsa and bachata lessons. You’ll also get to enjoy a mojito and several appetizers included with the price of your booking (of course, you can purchase additional food and drink as you like).

You’re bound to make new friends through the dance classes, and after the classes you can stay and continue to party at Mango’s nightclub with them!

17. Go Night Time Paddle Boarding or Kayaking

For a unique and adventurous evening out, join a group tour to go night time paddle boarding or kayaking! With the backdrop of Miami city lights all around you, this is sure to be a memorable night out.

At the end of the tour, your guide will offer up some chilled beverages so you can chat and sip with your fellow adventurers.

Where to Stay During a Solo Trip to Miami

The most popular areas to stay during a trip to Miami are typically on Miami Beach or in downtown Miami, but depending on your budget there are a variety of options:

✅ Budget: Hampton Inn Miami- Coconut Grove/Coral Gables

Coconut Grove or Coral Gables (they kind of mesh together) are typically nice parts of Miami to stay in that are inland and sometimes more budget friendly.

Depending on the time of year, you can find some hotel options for around $115 a night like the Hampton Inn Miami-Coconut Grove/Coral Gables

This is a great option for solo travelers in Miami because the room rates aren’t too bad for one person and this location is close to some activities like the catamaran sail with Salty Miami or the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

✅ Mid-Range: Intercontinental Miami IHG Hotel

The InterContinental Miami IHG Hotel is a fantastic mid-range hotel option within walking distance of downtown, bayside marketplace, the jet boat tour and more.

Being that it is more centrally located, a rideshare or public transportation to Miami Beach, Wynwood Walls, or Coconut Grove will likely also be shorter and cheaper.

✅ Luxury: Marriott Stanton South Beach

Staying right on the beach is a great way to make your solo trip to Miami a luxurious one. If you want to go all out, get a room with an ocean view and fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves.

Our favorite beach in Miami is the southernmost point of Miami Beach, right next to South Pointe Park. The Marriott Stanton South Beach is a great option right off the beach and within walking distance to Ocean Drive.

Getting Around Miami Solo

Depending on how many days you are staying and what you want to do on your Miami solo trip, there are multiple transportation options at your disposal.

The easiest, in terms of getting exactly where you want to go when you want to get there, would be renting a car.

But you should know that drivers are pretty wild in Florida, so you must be a good defensive driver. You also have to consider the cost of parking and gas when deciding whether or not renting a car is right for you.

Ride-shares or taxis are also on the higher end of transportation costs in Miami, but they are faster and more convenient than public transportation.

If you are just taking short rides in one area of the city, the costs shouldn’t be too high. But, exploring more areas of the city and the surrounding area will start to add up.

The cheapest transportation option in Miami would be public transportation. You can ride the Tri Rail or Brightline trains to other cities north of Miami, and even up to Orlando in case you are combining your solo trip with a Disney World vacation

And if you like to have things planned out for you or you want the chance to meet fellow travelers, there are plenty of Miami tours to join that include transportation.

Miami Safety Tips for Solo Female Travelers

Is it safe to travel to Miami alone? Although there typically aren’t problems in Miami for tourists, solo female travelers should take some extra precautions to be safe during their trip.

Be Extra Aware In Taxis Or Ride-shares

When you’re on a Miami trip as a solo female traveler, you should be extra aware and cautious when riding in taxis or ride-shares.

Although taxis, Lyfts, and Ubers are typically safe in Miami, a few solo female passengers have reported incidents with their male drivers especially during those big party weeks. Pay attention to your driving route and stay awake for your entire ride.

Always Keep An Eye On Your Food And Drinks

Solo female travelers should keep an eye on their food and drinks, especially in crowded restaurants or bars. Miami does have a pretty big party scene so if you’re into that, be extra cautious if you’re out there by yourself.

Keep To The Populated Tourist Areas At Night

If you are not renting a car during your solo trip to Miami, you’ll likely have to take public transportation to get around to different parts of the city.

If you are out past dark and waiting on a bus, taxi or ride-share, be sure to wait in a well lit area where there are plenty of other people.

Keep Your Phone Charged at All Times

In case of emergency, it’s always best to keep your phone fully charged. Consider traveling with a portable power bank, and take a look at these additional solo travel essentials.
