What to Wear in New York in Winter to Stay Warm, Dry and In Style
Wondering what to wear in New York in winter?
Besides the fact that I’ve found myself in New York in winter a few times, I’m also a born and raised Chicagoan.
Since Chicago winters are, on average, harsher than New York winters I feel confident in my recommendations to help you stay warm, dry and [somewhat] fashionable this season! So, read on for my top tips on what to wear in New York in winter.

What to Wear in New York in Winter
You’ll notice layers are a big part of the strategy for dressing warmly enough for New York winters. Here are some staples to add to your closet:
Fleece-Lined Leggings
From the moment I discovered fleece-lined leggings, I was sold. As someone who always feels cold, having the added coziness of fleece against my skin in winter has been a game-changer.
For milder days, you can wear these alone, paired with a tunic or dress. On colder days, wear them under your jeans or pants for that double layer protection against the cold.
I always go for basic black, but if you want to give the illusion that you’re actually wearing tights then get these fleece-lined tights.
Thermal Underwear
Another must-have to layer under both pants and your tops is thermal underwear. Look for options made with polyester or merino wool, known for their heat-trapping capabilities. One popular option is to shop Uniqlo’s heattech line.
Clothes crafted with merino wool offer more breathable, odor-resistant fabric. While a pricier option, brands like Smartwool offer high quality protection against cooler temperatures.
Boots
Winter in New York comes with rain, snow, sleet and ice. Having the proper footwear is key to navigating the streets in this city where walking is a primary mode of transportation.
Those of us who live through long, snowy winters like those in New York and Chicago tend to have many pairs of boots. We have dressier options, snow boots, rain boots, ankle boots, knee high boots – after all, winter lasts for months and months!
But, if you’re only visiting New York in winter for a short trip you definitely won’t need all of that. Depending on which month or how deep into the winter season you’re visiting, you may need heavier duty snow boots or you may be okay with a more fashion-forward option.
Take a look at my top recommendations for winter boots that focus on keeping feet warm and dry, while offering slip-resistance.
If you’re looking for more stylish options, check out the line of Blondo boots. They offer a variety of stylish, comfortable and waterproof options.
Socks
What you wear on your feet, before you put your boots on, also matters. If you’re wearing boots that are fleece-lined or pretty warm on their own you can probably stick with your regular socks.
But sometimes, that combination doesn’t cut it. When I had a longer work commute, I realized I needed warmer socks if I wanted to keep all my toes. That’s when I invested in some wool socks. You can get socks from Smartwool, or try the Bombas wool socks.
You might think the price is a bit much for socks, but these last a long time and keep your feet safe from harsh winters. Plus, even if you’re only going on a short trip to New York, wool socks will also come in handy on future trips to cold-weather destinations.
Corduroy Jeans
Since you’ll be layering with fleece-lined leggings, you really could wear whatever suits your style over them. But for even more warmth, opt for corduroy jeans.
Sweaters
Swap your blouses and tees for classic sweaters. There’s something about a well-fitting sweater that exudes both comfort and class. Here are some classic fits to consider:
Puffer Coat
Again, what you can get away with in terms of coat style depends on how far winter has progressed by the time of your visit. But most likely, a chic wool coat alone won’t cut it.
Go for a puffer coat instead, like this one from Aritzia.
If you’re visiting in the thick of winter, it’ll be important to have a longer coat that offers fuller coverage. Canada Goose coats remain a popular option and you’ll fit right in on the streets of New York.
But if the investment in a Canada Goose coat simply doesn’t make sense for you, here is an affordable alternative that’s been popular for years.
And yet another option – fur jackets also continue to have their moment.
Cold-Weather Accessories
Hats, earmuffs, gloves and scarves are definitely implied. On milder days, a baseball hat is just fine. If you want to skip the hat altogether, even when it’s colder, earmuffs like these are a cute pick.
Touchscreen winter gloves are the most convenient, as you won’t have to slip them on and off to use your phone.
And an oversized scarf is the perfect way to complete a look. For a budget option, grab this one from TikTok Shop.
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you don’t need sun protection. Don’t forget sunscreen and a pair of polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes!
Bonus Style Tip
If it’s important to you to present as stylish and to blend in a bit more with the locals, then here are a couple additional tips. For one, you can’t go wrong with wearing black or even brown. Black, in particular, is alway “in” in New York.
And second, when in doubt you can elevate any look by going monochromatic.
Sleek Suitcase
Pack your winter wardrobe for New York in a sleek suitcase. After all, this is perhaps the biggest accessory of all, and it’s easy to forget about until you’re ready to go in your chic outfit and realize your luggage is not-so-chic.

Here is a bit of a recap and some additional thoughts to help you as you pack for your NY trip:

On colder days, you’ll likely find yourself wearing 3 layers – thermal undershirt and leggings, jeans and a sweater over those, coat and cold-weather accessories over all of that.
Can you wear sneakers in NYC winter?
Yes, on days that are not as cold and when there is no snow or ice on the ground. My Allbirds have been a warm and durable travel companion for me across many destinations.
What kind of winter jacket do I need in NYC?
You’ll likely need something thicker than a pea coat during the thick of winter. A puffer coat or a longer Canada Goose coat will serve you well.
