Santorini in October Weather, What to Wear and What to Expect
If affordability, fewer crowds and summer weather appeal to you then absolutely visit Santorini in October. I was there from October 3-5 and if you’re looking for the best time to visit Santorini then honestly, early-mid October could be it.
Santorini in October weather
Although this is a destination often popularized as a summer vacation spot, it’s worth visiting Santorini in autumn – if you can even call it that! October weather in Santorini feels a lot like summer weather. In fact, it was downright hot and very sunny.
Average temperature in Santorini in October range from 63 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, but of course this also depends on how early or late in the month you visit.
During my early October trip I experienced temperatures on the higher side, and you can expect that to shift later in the month.
Can you still swim in Santorini in October?
Yes, expect the water temperature to be in the low 70s (F) meaning you can still comfortably swim in Santorini in October.
Many boat tours, including this luxe private yacht experience, will take you to various swimming spots around the island. One of these areas has hot springs, making it even more comfortable for swimming.
What to expect in Santorini in October
Apart from weather, here’s what else to know about visiting Santorini in October.
Is it crowded?
As someone who typically goes out of my way to avoid large crowds, I felt comfortable during my early October visit. It’s certainly still quite lively, but I never felt completely overwhelmed by the crowds surrounding me.
But you should know, I also sought out lesser explored areas of the island and avoided extremely popular Oia during sunset.
Overall, I appreciated having the buzz of people around me without feeling crushed by crowds.
Are things still open?
In early to mid October, yes things are very much still open. Later in October, you can expect a lot more closures and by the beginning of November it’ll be much quieter in Santorini.
If you want to be able to fully explore what the island has to offer without a lot of limitations due to closed businesses, then I strongly recommend visiting during the first half of October.
Will buses be running?
Yes, buses will still run year-round in Santorini. After all, in addition to being a tourist hotspot it’s where people also live.
That said, the frequency with which the buses operate changes dramatically beginning in late-October / early November.
For me, who visited during the first week of October, I was able to rely on buses as a primary mode of transportation. If you visit during late October, you might look into renting a car or hiring a private tour guide or chauffeur instead.
Are there enough things to do in Santorini in October?
Whenever you visit, you’ll find plenty of ways to enjoy this beautiful island. True, some events and restaurants will be closed later in the month, but you’ll still be able to explore the nearby villages, beaches and archaeological sites.
Rest assured that it’s possible to create a fun Santorini itinerary for your October travels.
What to wear in Santorini in October
When it comes to planning your outfits for Santorini stick to flowy, lightweight clothing and linen or cotton fabrics. My staples for visiting Santorini in October included:
Sleeveless maxi dress
It can get windy, so having longer dresses can keep you from unwanted exposure!
Linen pants
I paired these beige linen pants with lightweight blouses or button downs.
Cropped button downs
I grabbed these button downs in white and light pink and threw them on during early mornings for a touch of warmth before the sun fully came out.
Sun hat or cap
I had a cap with me and it was helpful for sun protection. A sunhat would’ve been better.
Sunscreen
The sun felt strong here, you’ll definitely want to apply and reapply sunscreen. For my face I stick with eltaMD and for body I usually go with the Supergoop lotion. Or, you could try local brands, like Aptiva or Korres, from a pharmacy.
Sunglasses
Protect your eyes with polarized sunglasses.
Swimsuit
Of course, if you plan to swim don’t forget to pack a swimsuit and coverup or shorts to go over it.
