6. Valencia

Valencia, Spain

Countless tourists visit Spain’s two biggest cities, Madrid and Barcelona, each year. But Spain’s third largest city, Valencia, often gets overlooked.

However, Valencia is also the home of the traditional Spanish dish, paella. The first paella was cooked just outside Valencia in a small village called El Palmar. This is known as the birthplace of paella.

You can do an amazing day trip from Valencia to El Palmar, where you can eat some delicious paella with local ingredients. And if you fancy some dessert, have a Horchata — a traditional Valencian drink made from tiger nuts.

One of the highest-rated accommodations in Valencia is the BONNIES Suites & Spa Valencia, it’s the perfect option if you want to combine your city trip with some relaxation in the hotel’s spa and wellness center.

8. Bilbao

Bilbao in Basque Country is one of the best places to visit in Spain for first timers

Bilbao is in northern Spain in the area called the Basque Country. The main reason to visit this city is its world-renowned Guggenheim Museum.

Bilbao used to be an industrial city and the area where the museum is located in today was once the city’s port. The Guggenheim Museum was built to turn around the city’s fortunes and attract tourists. It has certainly delivered on both fronts.

Even if you are not into art, the area around the museum is worth a visit. Not many other museums are as interesting on the outside as they are on the inside.

In addition to the fantastic architecture of the building, you can also marvel at its outdoor sculptures.

Walk around to the river side to see the 9-metre-tall giant spider called Maman. On the other side of the building is the Puppy, a 12-metre-high sculpture of a dog covered in flowers.

After getting your fill of art at either the Guggenheim Museum or one of the many other excellent art museums in the city, walk along the river to the old town. Wander its narrow streets and squares before stopping at a local restaurant serving pintxos.

Pintxos are Bilbao’s answer to tapas. You can find pintxo bars all over the city but the best places to try this Basque speciality are found in the old town.

The best place to stay in Bilbao is Hotel Tayko Bilbao. Or, to be closer to the Guggenheim Museum, stay at Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao, which is right next to the Puppy.

9. San Sebastián

San Sebastian in Spain

When it comes to being a first-timer to Spain, you should spend your time enjoying the coastal delights of San Sebastián.

This city is one of the most popular resort towns in the country, and is internationally renowned for its Spanish cuisine.

There is a relatively slow-moving lifestyle in San Sebastián, so as a first-timer you can relax and enjoy a leisurely pace for exploring.

Walk along the cobblestone roads leading to Monte Igueldo, where you can find some wonderful panoramic views of the entire bay and town.

Learn about the rich history of the Basque region at the Museo de San Telmo, filled with displays of Basque art and other artifacts.

Of course, as it is a resort town, you can also spend your day lazing around at the pristine beaches of the Bay of Concha or hit the waves with the other surfers at Playa de la Zurriola.

There is also amazing cuisine to be found in San Sebastián. Try a local pintxos bar either on your own or as part of a food tour.

We suggest booking a hotel in the Old Town section of San Sebastián. You may be further away from some seaside views but you can walk right downstairs into the vibrant local community.

We recommend the Abba San Sebastián Hotel, which features beautiful old architecture but is completely renovated inside. You will have excellent views and everything you need will be within walking distance.

Ibiza Town

Ibiza Town is a great city in Spain. It is located on the famous island of Ibiza, which is part of the Balearic Islands.

The city is great to visit for first-timers in Spain because it has a very unique and relaxing vibe, and because it is a very historic city as well.

The city consists of two parts: the old part, called Dalt Vila, and the more modern part. Both areas of the city are great to explore.

Visiting the Castle of Ibiza is one of the best things to do in Ibiza Town. This is a historic place that consists of various buildings, some of which are more than 1000 years old.

Going to the Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa is another interesting activity that one can do in Ibiza Town.

This is a contemporary art museum that is located in a 17th-century building in Dalt Vilta and the museum has a great collection of works by artists from Ibiza and other places in Spain.

Besides that, checking out the port of Ibiza Town can be a great activity. The port is home to many restaurants and local stores, and there are often luxurious yachts to admire.

A good hotel in Ibiza Town is El Port Eivissa Hotel Spa, which is a luxurious hotel with a beautiful pool with a view of Dalt Vila.

26. Cartagena

One of the true gem cities to visit in Spain on your first visit is Cartagena, a historically rich destination on the Mediterranean Sea, nestled cozily on the beautiful Palos Peninsula and belonging to the region of Murcia.

Cartagena is a very ancient port city and its history dates back to ancient times. Ever since then, it has carried a priceless cultural heritage in the form of historical landmarks and grand monuments that captivate the imagination to this day and offer a few of the best experiences in Spain.

One of the top places in Cartagena is Castillo de la Concepcion, which allows visitors to delve into its ancient past and witness its cultural heritage.

There is also the Roman Theatre Museum, built in the 1st century BC. Plus, its Old Town with interesting Naval Museum and Museum of Civil War of Spain.

Of course, there is also La Manga del Mar Menor  a unique strip of land separating the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor lagoon with beautiful beaches and gorgeous sunsets.

In close proximity to Cartagena, there are also numerous beautiful beaches and lovely B&B hotels that allow you to combine a city visit with a beach vacation.

While you’re in Cartagena, make sure to taste the traditional dish of “Caldero Cartagenero,” which is a hearty rice and fish stew very different from any other rice dish in Spain.

For a most exquisite stay, look into Hotel Principe Felipe – La Manga Club located between Cartagena city and a stretch of sandy beaches.

San Fernando is a city that, once you visit, leave you asking for more. This amazing city contains mud flat Dunes and beaches that can make your heart race.

San Fernando contains one of the best beaches in Spain. It contains 9km of sandy, golden beaches that have great conditions for windsurfing, surfing and boogie boarding.

Among those beaches are Playa Del Castillo and and Playa De Camposoto. Playa Del Castillo is called ‘the beach castle’ because it is near the legendary Sancti Perti Castle Island, which you should definitely also visit.

Another place that you should visit is the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park. Located at the mouth of the Guadalete river, the park contains marshland, beaches and sand dunes.

It is a good place to enjoy and relax among nature. It is also optimal for those who enjoy landscape and wildlife photography.

Additionally, you can stroll around downtown and taste some delicious authentic food at restaurants like La Fieera, Litos Corner and Fogon de Mariana.
