How to Spend One Day in Brooklyn

Let’s get into it, here’s your complete guide for how to spend a day in Brooklyn.

Morning in DUMBO

Start your Brooklyn adventure in the scenic neighborhood of DUMBO, a charming area known for its cobblestone streets and stunning waterfront views.

Walk Across the Famous Brooklyn Bridge

cross Brooklyn Bridge to spend a day in Brooklyn

Start by walking across Brooklyn Bridge. This free activity takes about 30 minutes, allowing you ample time to enjoy the views of Manhattan across the bridge. Get ready for some fantastic photo opps!

Tip: As an avid biker, I also enjoy a trip that includes riding along the bridge. If you’re short on time, you may consider this option as well – pick up a rental through Lyft and enjoy the swift ride in designated bike lanes that will get you to the other side in under 5 minutes.

Snap an Iconic Photo on Washington St

View of Brooklyn Bridge from Boardwalk

DUMBO, ‘Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,’ has evolved from its industrial roots into a vibrant community.

The neighborhood’s transformation is remarkable, blending historic cobblestone streets with modern galleries, trendy shops and inviting cafes.

After crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, walk over to Washington Street in DUMBO for another iconic photo opportunity. I love how this spot frames the Manhattan Bridge perfectly, with the Empire State Building visible between its arches — a classic New York image.

Post-photoshoot, explore the area’s charming bookstores, enjoy a local café’s brew, or soak in the ambiance of one of New York City’s most photogenic neighborhoods.

Take a Bike or Ferry to Williamsburg

Biking:

If you want action, rent a CitiBike through the Lyft app and enjoy a brisk, 20-minute ride along Flushing/Kent Avenue, about 3.4 miles through a beautiful urban landscape. I love taking my friends on this route as it feels completely safe yet very thrilling.

The main bike route is almost entirely along designated bike lanes separated from car traffic, making it a safe and fun way to get to the next stop on your itinerary.

For CitiBike Rentals, you pay a flat fee to unlock a bike and get a 30-minute ride. You can also rent a regular bike or an E-bike for an easier and faster ride.

You pay $0.26 per minute to rent an e-bike and also when you exceed 30 minutes of your ride. These rates are cheaper if you have a Lyft Pink or CitiBike membership.

NYC Ferry:

take the NYC ferry over to spend one day in Brooklyn

Nothing beats a tranquil NYC Ferry ride from DUMBO. Especially in the summer, I love feeling the breeze from the top deck while taking in picturesque cityscape views of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The ferry rides are from 6 A.M. to 9 A.M., arriving roughly every 20 minutes. The ride is about 10 minutes to South Williamsburg and 20 minutes to North Williamsburg. To get onto the ferry from DUMBO, search your preferred maps for Old Fulton St and Furman St.

Public Transportation:

This is not the best option, especially if you’re unfamiliar with Brooklyn. There are plenty of public transportation options, but none conveniently get you to Williamsburg. If you want the experience, then go for it! There are many suggested routes, so your best bet is to plug your destination into your preferred maps app.

Rideshare/Car:

This is the easiest and best option if you’re short on time. The ride to Williamsburg should be no more than 13 minutes if there isn’t unreasonable traffic.

Note that the fastest route will take you back into Manhattan and then over the Williamsburg Bridge. Be sure to let your driver know you want to drive through Brooklyn instead.

If you decide to drive, no problem! It is easy to find free street parking in Williamsburg. You do not need to find a parking garage. Your best bet will be to look around McCarren Park for a spot.

Lunch in Williamsburg

restaurants in Williamsburg Brooklyn

After your morning exploration, Williamsburg welcomes you with many lunch options. No matter where you wander, you’re sure to find something delicious to satisfy your cravings:

Aurora Brooklyn

For a taste of Italy, Aurora Brooklyn offers exquisite Tuscan-style cuisine. This spot is perfect for a relaxed, flavorful meal amidst a charming setting. I’m a sucker for cacio e pepe, and their lunch offering is to die for!

Smorgasburg

For foodies who love variety, Smorgasburg in Williamsburg is a paradise. Hosted at Marsha P. Johnson Park on Saturdays during warmer weather months, this bustling outdoor food market features a range of vendors serving everything from gourmet bites to hearty comfort food.

One of my favorites is Mao’s Bao, which specializes in these delicious pan-fried buns. After I’ve had my fill, I love roaming through the rest of the park, and I especially love resting my feet at the tiny sliver of beach sand right by the water along the East River.

The Butcher’s Daughter

Seeking a vegetarian or vegan option? The Butcher’s Daughter offers a menu of plant-based delights known for their taste and presentation.

Sunday in Brooklyn

If it’s the weekend, Sunday brunch in Brooklyn is a must. Known for its innovative dishes and cozy ambiance, it’s a local favorite that’s sure to delight. I love a good brunch and this is definitely a staple brunch spot that you should check out if you get a chance.

Afternoon in Williamsburg

After a delightful lunch in Williamsburg, continue your Brooklyn journey with these unique experiences:

Visit the City Reliquary Museum

Delve into the quirky history of New York City at the City Reliquary Museum. This charming spot, open only on the weekends from 12 pm-6 pm, isn’t your typical museum. Instead of housing ancient artifacts or famous works of art, this museum celebrates forgotten everyday objects from New York City’s vibrant history.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students/seniors, with free entry for children under 12. It’s a perfect place to discover the lesser-known tales of the city at the Brooklyn Museum.

Window Shopping and Local Finds

I love a good window shopping moment, especially while I’m in Brooklyn. There is a huge variety of stores that cater to everything you may want. I love checking out the thrift shops and finding a new item that I can’t refuse.

When my friends are in town, I bring them to the Brooklyn Flea Market, just a short walk from the City Reliquary Museum. It’s a market with over 100 vendors selling vintage and contemporary goods, it’s an ideal place to explore and find one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

I also enjoy walking through the Mini Mall and Artists & Fleas. Both places host a number of shops and vendors with fun local wares, accessories, clothing, and more. You’re bound to find a unique item by the time you’re done perusing.

Relax with an Afternoon Beer or Cocktail

Brooklyn Brewery is a great afternoon place to sample some unique brews. Their tasting room is open starting at 4 pm on weekdays and noon on weekends, inviting visitors to experience the brewery’s ambiance and flavors.

For enthusiasts, they offer in-depth small-batch tours for $23, alongside free tours available on a first-come-first-served basis. A highlight not to be missed is their selection of brewer’s reserve beers, exclusive to the brewery and an authentic taste of Brooklyn’s brewing craft.

Whenever I’m in the mood for a cocktail, I stop by Gran Torino, a little known bar with a warm vibe and an abundance of plants. The bar’s fun prohibition vibe adds to its charm, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a unique drinking experience.

My favorite area is the greenhouse, allowing me to soak up rays but stay warm and cozy when it’s cold out.

Their frozen beverages are amazing! If you don’t drink alcohol, have no fear. No matter where you go for a drink, there are always fun non-alcoholic options. Cheers!

Admire Williamsburg’s Street Art

I am always blown away by the amount of beautiful and dynamic street art around Williamsburg. Renowned for its urban canvases, the neighborhood showcases murals and graffiti that speak volumes.

Williamsburg’s street art showcases the neighborhood’s artistic flair and demonstrates the evolution of “graffiti” from rebellious expression to today’s quintessential Brooklyn charm.

It’s fun to wander down the streets and uncover hidden masterpieces on building facades and old warehouses. These artworks, created by local and international artists, reflect diverse themes and stories, making each a unique piece of Brooklyn’s cultural tapestry.

Walk down Bedford Ave for the best and most famous murals on just about every corner. Check out key spots at the corner of  North 14th Street and Berry Street for great work there as well. There are plenty of online resources for a more thorough list of all the notable murals around Williamsburg.

Dinner Time in Williamsburg

As evening falls, Williamsburg’s culinary scene comes alive. The restaurants in Williamsburg are amazing, and there are so many options that it’s hard for me to decide where I’d like to try next. Here are some of my top recommendations:

Laser Wolf Restaurant

Perched with a view, Laser Wolf offers a meal and a visual feast. The views of the city are stunning, the food is delicious, and the atmosphere is lively. I find this place perfect for having a dining experience with a vibrant backdrop.

Nura BK

I love Indian food, and Nura stands out for its exceptional ambiance and innovative cuisine. Known for blending traditional ingredients creatively, it’s a place where every dish tells a story. Ideal for foodies looking for a meal that’s as intriguing as it is delicious.

Sweet Chick Williamsburg

Sweet Chick is my go-to spot for a filling Southern meal at a black-owned establishment. Renowned for its modern take on comfort food, this eatery offers hearty, soul-satisfying dishes that embody the essence of Brooklyn’s culinary spirit.

Each option satisfies your taste buds and provides a window into Williamsburg’s diverse and vibrant culture, rounding off your afternoon in Brooklyn in the most delightful way.

Evening in Greenpoint

As day transitions into evening, head to Greenpoint to experience the unique charm and activities this neighborhood has to offer:

Catch the Sunset at the Top of the Box Rooftop Bar

Top of the Box is a solid rooftop bar based inside the Box House Hotel. Open from 5 pm to 3 am daily, this spot has stunning panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn.

There’s nothing better than a beverage while watching the sun set in the company of friends.

Pop by Sunshine Laundromat: A Quirky Brooklyn Experience

When I stumbled across this place, I thought, “This is so Brooklyn.” What I expected to be a laundromat turned out to be a speakeasy of sorts, merging laundry with a bar, pinball machines and other games.

It is open from Monday to Friday, 5:00 PM to 2:00 AM, and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 AM. While I’ve let you in on the quirk of this trendy space, this is still a cool place to bring friends and family for an unexpectedly great time. Check it out!

Enjoy Live Music at Warsaw

As a music enthusiast, I’m happy to have experienced the magic of this historic venue that has been a part of Brooklyn’s music scene since 1941.

Warsaw hosts a variety of famous musicians, typically catering to a community of punk rock artists and those that love them. Check their website for upcoming shows and events and prepare to immerse yourself in the local music culture.

Stroll Through Transmitter Park at Night

Transmitter Park might be my favorite for a tranquil stroll. Transmitter Park, aptly named due to once being the home of WNYC radio transmission towers, has transformed into a 6.61-acre public park in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn.

It has vast gardens, a nautically-themed children’s play area and a pier that is stunning at night.

It is a peaceful (and romantic) spot to relax by the water, reflecting on your day’s adventures. Also, for those staying in Manhattan, it is a couple blocks from the pick-up point for the ferry.

Hop on the NYC Ferry Back to Manhattan

Conclude your day with a scenic ferry ride back to Manhattan. The NYC Ferry service will offer a comfortable ride and one last glimpse of the city skyline that now shines bright at nighttime.

Catch the ferry at 10 India Street in Greenpoint. Check out the NYC Ferry website for the latest pick-up times – they differ between weekdays and weekends.
